Evaluator 2: Kim Timer: Becky Jokemaster: Becky and John S. Guests: Laura L. Beth N. | Noemi introduced the topic of Earth Day and invited each person to describe something they like that is green. Answers varied from food, to trees to recycling bins. She gave the Thought for the Day using two balls she won during another event earlier in the day. One was covered with hearts and the other was a smiley face. Paula suggested the word of the day, virescent, which means green in color. Unfortunately, during the whole meeting, no one else used the word. The reason we offer a word of the day is to expand our vocabulary and to be creative in how we can use it while speaking during the meeting. Kim Smith presented a speech from the Speaking to Inform manual called "Shaking it Up.” It was about how creativity and passion create value in public speaking. John S. presented a short Pocket Speech. He always has at least one memorized speech “in his pocket” so that he can volunteer to speak at any time. The hilarious speech centered around two Southern jokes, and was spoken with a pretty accurate Southern accent. Dan S. evaluated Kim’s speech, describing words and mannerisms he liked and also offered some suggestions for improvement in future talks. Kim S. did double duty evaluating John’s speech, including comments on his relaxed manner and creative choice of story jokes. For Table Topics - impromptu speaking – Jim went along with the theme of Earth Day and asked questions related to trees. Dave W. described childhood memories about climbing trees near his home and looking at the distant horizon. Paula took a humorous approach and told us she wanted to plant a maple tree in her yard… in spite of her husband claim that maples wouldn’t do well there. When Jim asked Dan S what his favorite wood was, Dan veered away and answered Wood Ducks! That’s allowable in Table Topics! After club participants voted for the Best Table Topics presentation, Noemi awarded one of her balls to Dan. |
